May is NAR’s advocacy month and it was on full display as Dayton REALTORS® descended on our nation’s capital to participate in the NAR Legislative Meetings and engage in dialogue with their elected leaders about issues that impact their business every day.
The agenda for 2018 included a number of issues: equal access to housing opportunity, tax policy, national flood insurance program, and net neutrality.
When meeting with Congressman Mike Turner, members expressed concern over HUD’s lack of implementation of changes mandated by the “Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act of 2016”. This law passed Congress unanimously in July of 2016, but rules remain unfinished.
Dayton members also discussed the importance of ending the marriage penalty. The penalty is in reference to there being no difference in state and local tax deductions (SALT) between single and joint filers. The new tax reform established a SALT deduction cap at $10,000. REALTORS® urge members of Congress to double the SALT deduction to $20,000 for joint filers.
Additionally, Dayton members invited our representatives to discuss affordable housing and community development in the Dayton area. Congressman Turner was encouraged to increase efforts to support communities that haven’t necessarily seen the progress and recovery that others have seen since the economic downturn. For his part, Congressman Turner acknowledged the points made during the meeting and applauded the energy and passion on display for the Dayton area and efforts for revitalization. He shared and reflected on his time as mayor of Dayton and specifically pointed to his part in implementing the “Rehabarama” initiative. Being encouraged by the dialogue, he indicated a desire to build on that meeting in the district.
